Scary facts about Net Security
Though I am not that expert with network security, but I think if it comes to the fact that 70% of companies networks are insecure, and 45% to 50% of VoIP providers are insecure… then yes i am one!
Believe it or not, the reason why 70% of companies networks are insecure is because they use default password or easy common one such as “cisco, password, admin, etc”. So if you had access to a scanner “google it” and let it run in a stealth mode, you will be surprised of how many open networks you would receive. And if you are asking for a specific information about a company’s network “routers type, ip range, etc”, then it is out there for sale on IRC channels…I think you can buy yourself a 2 gig worth of stuff for $800 dollar…interesting, huh?
The funny thing about this fact that IT industry has known about for at least two decades and there has been no much progress on it… due to priority list? Well, actually the sysadmins focus more on functionality of the system “running? not running?” and forget or neglect to change the default password.. Also, too lazy to remember / note too many passwords… so they would rather use the default/easy-one to make life easy.
The other scary fact, Sysadmins do not learn from each other. Example, if a site is running a service that got hacked on other sites, then why will sysadmin keep it running? Laziness? Not on priority list? you pick…
And last, many of sysadmins choose not to patch their systems on time for a simple reason: Too risky/lazy?! “If I run the patch, then my current services might crash… and honestly, the weekend is here and no thank you”.
