OpenID: Google & Yahoo joining OpenID forces..
It seems like the dream of a universal Internet user ID is getting closer to reality since major web-service providers have announced their intention to support the OpenID platform. If you are not sure what OpenID, you can read my previous post about it. But it is basically a decentralized service that will alow any user to use a singular login in for any participating website.
Let me elaborate what Google’s & Yahoo’s plans are with OpenID.
Yahoo: Initially will not allow any user of third-party “i.e myopenid.com” to OpenID participants to log into Yahoo with those accounts. But there is indication that Yahoo in near-future will be more friendly with OpenID when Yahoo’s infrastructure is ready.
The announcement is significant because of Yahoo’s massive user base, which reportedly totals 248 million – more than twice the existing number of OpenID accounts. In total, about 9,000 sites are already participating. Yahoo is expected to link user accounts to OpenID in public beta testing on January 30.
As for Google, they didn’t have the guts to make that big of a move as what Yahoo did. Instead, they got Blogger.com to become OpenID provider. Where Blogger users are able to use their blogs URL as an OpenID login, after toggling the option via the draft.blogger.com admin menu.
Note to myself: My prediction of DeCentralized Social Media is getting closer to reality
