Google Docs goes offline | Gmail in a month?
Last year we all predicted that Google is going offline with its major products (Reader, Docs, Spreadsheet, Gmail, etc) and that prediction is becoming reality now… well, at least for docs for now.
Being able to have your documents stored up in the cloud, but also saved away for the time where you don’t have connectivity is important, and today the Google Docs team supports local service via Google Gears.
I bet with Google Gears enabled on Docs, two things will make a difference
- The experience will be a lot faster even in a connected or slow connected environment cause things are already saved up on your simpledb
- Reliability! Knowing I can access my docs anytime without thinking of “is Qtel Down today?!”
Having things continue to just work as you go in and out of service is a great feeling. You trust the system more.
If you are still new to Gears, Ben Lisbakken has published a tutorial that he has as a screencast. Take a peak and get up to speed.
Now, rumors about gmail going offline is pretty high right now… the prediction is that in a month time Gmail will be available on Google Gears. Which means, you will have access to your thousands of your emails while you are offline… cool huh?
p.s. I am using wordpress 2.5 backend to write this… I am liking it…
