Facebook joining DataPortability to disrupt?
I’ve posted earlier on how facebook is a closed network and that is one of its core reasons for its current success. But then this announcement that just came out stating:
We are proud to announce the inclusion of Joseph Smarr (Plaxo), Brad Fitzpatrick (Google) and Benjamin Ling (Facebook) to the DataPortability Workgroup.
Plaxo, Google and Facebook together represent the key players in the competing approaches to Social Networking platforms and Data Portability.
Now, my first reaction was: “Sweet! Facebook has finally realized it will be a loser if it doesn’t open up” but then my next thought was “What if this is just a publicity stunt just to cool down the web communities (bloggers, etc) after it’s ridiculous move in banning Plaxo users for importing data from its site?” I guess I will remain skeptical about facebook and being open network till I see a feature on my facebook indicating now I can mashup my content with Plaxo or even YouTube.
Anyway, if the major social network and online media / search sites adopt a common social graph standard, the fun really starts. It will be difficult to port total data from one site to another due to the different sites structures. But that is not the main focus, the actual focus is on having the ability to port and mashup content, reputation and recommendations from multiple sources.
